The Vampire's Family
Short Story about forbidden love and secrets.
Story from an Alternate Universe for Matthew Lightbane and Jeremiah Nikolavich
Miah’s eyes sparkle as he slowly wraps his arms around my neck and pulls my face towards his. Our lips meet as I slowly and gently push him back down onto the mattress. Jeremiah smiles and laces his fingers into my hair. I smile and start laughing.
“No.” Miah whines.
“I’m sorry.” I say still laughing. “You’re just so adorable.” I peck Miah’s lips a few times before he gets mad.
“Matthew!” Jeremiah yells angrily.
“Sorry.” I say brushing my lips against his. I glance at the clock on the nightstand, we have one minute. I press my lips to his soft lips once again. “Damn it.” Miah says as I jump up and turn off the alarm. Less than one minute, apparently.
I sigh and lean down placing light kisses along his jawline and the side of his neck. Trying to ignore the conversation we had a few minutes earlier. Still, I internally panic over the fact that Jeremiah wants me to meet his family. “I have to go.” I whisper into his ear.
“I know.” Jeremiah says with a sigh. “Just leave before I trap you here.” Miah squeezes my hand.
“Of course.” I say kissing Miah’s hand and letting it go, he frowns as his hand falls onto the mattress.

“Oh God.” I say as Luke covers his nose. “Why didn’t anyone find him sooner?” I’m sure other cars were directed to his house to check on Commander Ficks.
“He took some personal days; said he was going on vacation with his family.” Luke says in disgust. “This is going to be an all-hands-on deck case.” Luke says, stepping into the commander’s home. We were told to make sure he got home okay, he didn’t. “He got back last night, supposedly.”
“I don’t think he ever made it out of here.” I mutter following Luke.
“Do we need to go through the home, make sure it’s clear?” Luke asks, stepping closer to the body.
“Nope, it’s empty.” I say, Luke nods his head.
“Look.” Luke says leaning down closer to the commander’s corpse. Luke points at the side of Commander Ficks's neck. “Fangs.”
“Damn it.” I mutter, it still echoes through the living room with the high ceiling.
“Do you know any vampires besides Jeremiah?” Luke asks.
“He’s only half vampire, he couldn’t have done this.” I say, he would never do this.
“I know.” Luke sighs. “Emerald made a bracelet that keeps him from basically thinking about blood.” Right, Emerald she's his best friend. She's the most powerful being in the Universe. Emerald is always protecting Jeremiah.
“I know, it’s a black, braided band that he never takes off.” I say looking around the room. “There, next to the window, a footprint.” Luke follows me to the window.
“Patrol squad 5-22 what's your status?” I hear over my radio; I glance at Luke. No one is going to take this news lightly. "Patrol squad 5-22, status.”
“Dispatch, we have an issue.” Luke says into his radio. “The commander…is deceased, roll the crime lab.” Luke says with a sigh.
There’s silence for a while. “Copy that squad 5-22.” The dispatcher's voice cracks through the silent living room.
“How the hell are we going to explain this?” Luke asks after hearing more police sirens.
“We could pierce another hole into his neck with something else. Like if he was injected with three needles of some things.” I say, Luke nods his head and picks up a glass shard, he bends the winds around the shard forming a point at one end with the width that matches the fangs. He quickly and carefully pierces the decaying flesh with the mini dagger. Luke slips the shard into his pocket as the door bursts open once again.
“Oh jeez!” A plain clothes officer shouts. His partner groans in disgust as they cover their noses.
“Yup.” Luke says, scrunching his nose. “You get used to the smell though.” You really don't.
“Look.” I say squatting down, I point at the strange circle of missing flesh on his arm. “What is that?” The plain clothes officers put gloves on as more officers walk in. Luke and I are idiots for not noticing that sooner.
“Where’s all the blood?” The detective asks, putting their gloves on.
“Maybe the body was dumped.” Their partner says.
“Then what’s with the shattered window?” One of the detectives examining his arm asks. They make Luke and I greet the crime lab at the door ten minutes later.
“He has three strange, like…holes on the side of his neck.” Luke gestures to his own neck, the guy nods his head and walks into the commander’s home. “So…why are you nervous?” Luke asks, glancing at me. “You walked out of your apartment like you saw a ghost.”
I sigh and look up at the cloudy sky. “Miah wants me to meet his parent’s- well, his family.” I say, Luke nods his head.
“What's the problem with that?” Luke's face scrunches up in confusion.
“They’re vampires!” Luke’s eyes widen and he looks into the house.
“Say it louder, I don’t think our deceased commander heard you.” Luke says through his clenched teeth. I roll my eyes.
“Our deceased commander learned they existed right before he died.” Now Luke rolls his eyes.
“It’ll be fine.” Luke crosses his arms. I sigh and give up on trying to argue. Luke knows why it shouldn’t be fine. We spend the rest of the day placing cones with numbers around the commander’s home, inside and outside. The sky darkens with clouds causing us to move outside to secure the evidence before it starts to rain. My hands are shaky as I continue to think about Miah and meeting his entire family.
I inhale shakily and close my locker. It’s not just going to be his parents but his entire family, sisters, cousins, grandparents. And they’re all either vampires or half vampires. “Bye.” Someone says, I have no idea who.
“Bye.” Luke and I say at the same time.
“Good luck.” Luke says, patting my shoulder and walking out of the door. I take my duffle bag to my car and unlock my phone pulling up the address Jeremiah sent me.
The workday rushes through my head, Luke and I tried to cover up the true crime. The fangs. Obviously from vampires. Vampires, like Miah’s family. They couldn't kill the Commander; they're not supposed to feed on people. Either way, I’m dead if they find out I’m a werewolf.
